Technology Journey

The journey a technology makes from theoretical postulate to a hardware/ software product with defined, and warranted, performance is the process perhaps best understood by inventors and is often described in terms of concepts such as TRLs (Technology Readiness Levels) and the work categorised as ‘basic or applied research’.

GSA staff have developed an alternative approach based on the ‘proof of’ framework  shown above. This  puts technology into the context  of novel  ideas progressing with milestones associated with proving that they: work in theory - work in a laboratory - work outside a laboratory  -  can be manufactured - work for purchasers - and finally can be guaranteed to work. Applying this approach has been shown to be very helpful to companies as they seek to structure their technology development  plans, anticipate upcoming challenges and set about raising funds to meet forthcoming challenges.
